Latest news from BOB
Buddies of Beckets are participating in the Poetry Project.
The aim of the project is to spread positivity by bringing
poetry into parks and public spaces. The poems are being
shared by poet James McInerney. James has been running
the project since 2018 and explained how it started.
“Upon a visit to London, I was inspired by the Service
Information boards on the London Underground that display
train information and delays. I occasionally saw quotes from
famous authors but never poetry. When I returned home I
immediately messaged one of stations and was pleasantly
surprised when they said yes. The aim of the project is to get
poetry into places you wouldn't normally see it and open
people`s eyes to the joy of poetry.” As James is from Northampton it is great to share the poems locally. However, the project has reached as far as the USA and Australia. New Wildflower Meadow for Beckets Park
Buddies of Beckets is working with the local Sikh community,
with support from Ide Verde and Northampton Borough
Council to create a wildflower area in Beckets Park. An area
near the Bedford Rd has been sprayed to kill off the grass and
wildflower meadow seeds will sown be sown to benefit bees
and butterflies in the spring. The Sikh community are helping
to fund and create the meadow to celebrate the 550th
Anniversary of Guru Nanak. Further work on the area will take
place over the next month, and hopefully the flowers will come
to life next year for insects and people in the park to enjoy.
The Mela returns!
Despite a rather wet day, hundreds of people
came to enjoy the performances, stalls and
activities in Beckets Park. As well as enjoying
dances from Bhangra Blaze, Kalinka, Kristina
Rhianoff's Bespoke Ballroom, and Irish dancers,
there was music provided by local bands and
even some poetry. People were also able to
try their climbing skills, explore a fire engine
and meet the Army and Police Firearms team.
The Melafeatured on Anglia TV and a double
page feature in the Chronicle and Echo.
Thank you to everyone who supported the
Mela and for those who braved the
rain and came along on the day.
A new noticeboard and banner for BOB!
BOB has been raising money to buy banners
and a notice board to raise awareness and
publicise events in the park. Thank you to all
our donors who help us to pay for these and
many other projects.
Our Sunday morning health walks
are growing! We love to have new
people come along to join us in
discovering Beckets Park, the new
Waterside Campus and areas along the
River Nene. Visit or events page for
BOB volunteers teamed up with
student and staff from The University
of Northampton to take part in the
Great British Spring Clean.
We collected over 30 stone of rubbish!
We also helped Ide Verde plant six
new trees in Beckets Park. These
replaced some older trees that had
to be removed due to disease.
